Birch bark canoe build by local wood carver artist . The bottom of the canoe was mostly flat with an upwards curve at the stern and bow of the canoe. Historically, the Tête de Boule canoe played a significant role in fueling the North American fur trade. Beginning in the 17th century the French began to hire the Tête de Boule people to both build and paddle canoes.
